A village with no through-roads
El Portal is a village of fewer than 2,000 people on 0.42 square miles, tucked between I-95 and Biscayne Boulevard just north of the Little River. Oak canopy over narrow streets, houses more than a century old in places, and a bird sanctuary designation it has held for over fifty years. Its own transportation plan puts it plainly: there are no major roadways running through the village.
Which is exactly why the pickup matters
No through-traffic means quiet streets, and quiet streets mean a black sedan idling at the curb is noticed. Our chauffeurs arrive on time rather than early, park clear of the driveway, and wait for the call rather than the horn. Miami International is around nine miles out, typically thirteen minutes when I-95 and the 112 are moving. Opa-locka Executive is closer at roughly nine miles north, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood runs about eighteen miles up I-95.
Cruise runs and evenings on NE 2nd Avenue
PortMiami is about six and a half miles south, which makes El Portal one of the easier embarkation pickups in the county: no causeway crossing, just Biscayne straight down. In the evenings the traffic reverses. NE 2nd Avenue takes you into Little Haiti and on to the Design District and Wynwood in ten minutes, and the return trip at 1am is one of our steadier weekend bookings.
A village with real history under it
The El Portal Archaeological Zone was designated in 1983 and covers four sites on the north bank of the Little River, including a Tequesta burial mound built as early as 600 A.D., the first archaeological site in Miami-Dade to be publicly preserved. The name is Spanish for the gate, after two wooden gates that stood on NE 2nd Avenue until the 1940s. The village incorporated in 1937, and manatees still turn up in the Little River when the water cools.
