Florida City is the southernmost city in the United States that is not on an island, and the last mainland town before US-1 commits to the Overseas Highway. About 13,000 people live here on six square miles of former tomato and squash country. For a car service it is less a destination than a hinge: almost everything we drive through Florida City is going somewhere else.
The long run from the airport
Miami International is roughly 32 miles north, typically about 46 minutes down the Homestead Extension of the Turnpike, which ends right here where it meets US-1. Downtown Miami is 34 miles. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is closer to 59 miles and well over an hour. These are real distances, so we do not run them as a metered guess: Keys transfers are quoted flat, in advance, with the toll included.
Gateway to the Keys and both national parks
Key Largo is about 29 miles south, roughly 45 minutes. Key West is 126 miles and about three and a quarter hours on a good day, longer on a Friday. Card Sound Road leaves US-1 here as the only alternative route into North Key Largo, and on holiday weekends it is often the faster one. Inland, the Ernest F. Coe visitor center at the Everglades main entrance is about ten miles west, and Biscayne National Park's Dante Fascell center is roughly five miles east on SW 328th Street, both easy half-day trips with a chauffeur waiting rather than a rental car baking in a lot.
The other reasons people book here
Race weekends at Homestead-Miami Speedway, two miles north. The Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace on East Palm Drive, fifty-odd stores at the US-1 and Turnpike junction. Agribusiness travel tied to the State Farmers' Market. And cruise transfers to PortMiami, a 34-mile run best started earlier than most passengers expect. The town was founded as a land promotion called Detroit, settled by families from Topeka in 1910, and incorporated in 1914.
