Little Managua, ten miles west of the airport
Sweetwater is a city of about 19,400 people packed into four and a half square miles of western Miami-Dade. Roughly 95% of residents are Hispanic, the largest share Cuban and Nicaraguan, and the Nicaraguan community is big enough that the city has been called Little Managua for decades. Spanish is the language of the street here, and every chauffeur we send is fluent in it.
The Dolphin Expressway runs straight through it
SR 836 cuts through the middle of the city and runs east directly to Miami International, about ten miles and fourteen minutes when the road is empty. It is rarely empty. Between 7 and 9 in the morning, and again from 4 to 7, that same trip can take half an hour or more, and the Turnpike interchange at the city's edge is where it backs up. We quote pickup times against the hour you are actually traveling, not against a map estimate.
Dolphin Mall is inside the city limits
Sweetwater annexed it in 2010 after 68% of voters said yes, and a second annexation in 2021 brought in Telemundo's headquarters, Topgolf, and the Beacon Lakes industrial park where Amazon, Goya and UPS run distribution. That mix is why our Sweetwater bookings split so evenly between corporate and personal: a network executive to Telemundo in the morning, a family to MIA for an afternoon flight to Managua, a shopper heading back to a South Beach hotel with more bags than the trunk was built for.
FIU is across the street, not inside the line
Florida International University's Modesto Maidique campus sits on the far side of SW 8th Street, adjacent but a separate address. We drive it constantly during commencement and conference season, moving visiting faculty and families between campus and the airport. The city itself has an unusual origin: platted as Sweetwater Groves in the 1920s and wiped out by the 1926 hurricane, it was revived in 1938 when a developer sold the lots to a troupe of Russian circus performers who had fled the revolution. Sweetwater incorporated in 1941.
