The airport is the southern border
Virginia Gardens is 0.3 square miles with about 2,360 residents, and its southern border is Miami International Airport. You can hear the airfield from the front yards. The village has fought MIA's noise contours for decades and opposed a fourth runway over it, and the 1948 airport expansion took every acre of village land south of NW 36th Street.
Adjacent is not the same as close
Sharing a fence line with an airport does not mean a short drive to the terminals. You have to go around the airfield, which makes it about 4.6 miles and nine minutes to departures, quick but not the ninety seconds the map suggests. NW 36th Street, signed as SR 948, is the artery: it runs west to the Palmetto cloverleaf in Doral and east toward Le Jeune. Nearly every ride we run here uses it, and we time pickups against the 36th Street commercial strip rather than against straight-line distance.
Aviation is the local economy
Boeing and Pan Am flight academies operate in and around the village, which means a steady rotation of pilots in town for recurrent simulator training, usually a few days, usually on a fixed schedule, usually needing the same 5am pickup every morning. Standing reservations handle that better than booking each leg. Televisa International is headquartered here as well, and MIA is the busiest airport in the United States for international freight, so freight-forwarding and air-cargo executives make up much of the rest.
The hotel corridor on NW 36th Street
Several airport hotels sit inside village limits along NW 36th Street, including the Holiday Inn Express at 5911. Guests there are usually connecting, on a layover, or in for a single day of meetings, and want a car that shows up at the porte-cochere on the minute, so we stage locally for those. The village itself was platted in 1925 and chartered in July 1947 by 26 residents, led by a horse-farm owner who objected to Miami Springs annexing the land and banning horses near houses. Curtiss Parkway is named for the aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss.
