West Miami is a grid of one-story stucco homes between Tamiami Trail and Coral Way, bounded east and west by Red Road and Ludlam. About 7,200 people live there, 86% Hispanic and two-thirds foreign-born. It is a small, established, largely Cuban-American city, and it is easy to miss on a map next to the sprawl around it.
The shortest airport run in Miami-Dade
Miami International is barely two miles north in a straight line. Nothing else incorporated in the county sits that close. In practice you are looking at ten to twenty minutes door to terminal depending on whether we take Red Road north, run east on 8th Street to Le Jeune, or jump on the Dolphin. That proximity cuts both ways: a short trip leaves no margin, so we stage the vehicle early rather than shave the pickup.
Not the same as lowercase west Miami
Lowercase, west Miami means everything past the city line: Flagami, Westchester, Sweetwater, Doral. West Miami is a specific municipality with its own city hall and ZIP 33144, and it borders Coral Gables directly to the east. Getting that wrong costs a driver fifteen minutes, which is why our dispatch confirms the cross street on every booking here.
What we are usually driving
This is a residential city, not an office district. Our work is airport transfers, cruise transfers to PortMiami about eight miles east, and the short hop to Coral Gables, where Miracle Mile is under three miles away and the banking and legal offices along Ponce are a standing weekday run. Weekends bring the other half of the business: quinceaneras, weddings and family gatherings where a sedan or Sprinter beats parking three cars on a narrow residential street. The city incorporated in 1947 with about 700 residents, and Marco Rubio won his first election here as a city commissioner in 1997, at 26.
